Asturias to open new cave for Gamonéu cheese production
The Government of Asturias has committed to opening a new cave to increase the maturation capacity for Gamonéu cheese, a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) product. The initiative aims to address space limitations at the current primary site, Cueva Oscura in Avín, which holds approximately 2,000 pieces but is reaching its capacity due to rising temperatures and production growth.
Studies conducted by the DOP indicate that the La Cañada cave in Onís meets the necessary requirements for production. This expansion is intended to support the growing sector, which currently includes 21 creameries producing roughly 165,000 kilograms annually.
During the XLVI Gamonéu Cheese Contest in Benia de Onís, several producers were recognized. Vega de Ceñal renewed its award for the third consecutive year, while Gumartini was named the best cheese from the Puertu region. A charity auction of the winning cheeses raised 8,500 euros for the El Patiu association.
