Asturias to resume wolf hunts with 67-animal quota

The Government of the Principality of Asturias plans to resume wolf hunts starting in September, setting a maximum quota of 67 animals. This measure aims to mitigate damage to extensive livestock farming in the Cantabrian Mountains. While livestock farmers view the quota as a necessary step to curb losses, environmental organizations criticize lethal control and advocate for preventive measures instead.

A study conducted by researchers from IREC-CSIC and other institutions suggests that sustainable coexistence requires involving farmers in management design and increasing financial aid. The research indicates that while national frameworks should standardize compensation, direct management must be tailored to local scales. Experts recommend providing recurring aid for the maintenance of preventive tools, such as livestock guarding dogs and fencing, rather than just one-time subsidies. Additionally, simplifying administrative procedures and accelerating indemnity payments for livestock losses are cited as essential steps to rebuilding trust between farmers and institutions.
