Asturias woman drowns at Valdemurio Reservoir

Montse Álvarez López, 52, died by drowning at the Valdemurio Reservoir in Quirós, Asturias, following an astronomical eclipse. The victim was the daughter of Javier Álvarez Alonso, a former player for the football club Real Oviedo.

According to reports, Álvarez López and her partner visited the reservoir to observe the eclipse. After the event, they went for a walk near the pier, where she decided to enter the water for a swim. She disappeared beneath the surface, and although her partner attempted a rescue, he was unable to locate her and called for emergency services.

Emergency responders from the Principado de Asturias Emergency Service and the Guardia Civil's Underwater Activities Group conducted a search operation. Her body was recovered in the early hours of Thursday at a depth of between seven and ten meters. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as drowning.
