Astypalaia named top hidden European summer destination for 2026
The British newspaper The Sun featured the Greek island Astypalaia among ten "hidden treasures" of Europe for the summer of 2026. The selection highlighted the island’s authenticity, natural beauty, low environmental footprint and ability to offer unique experiences away from mass tourism. Criteria included preserving the authentic character of destinations, offering lesser‑known areas, distinct natural identity and cultural heritage. The Sun described Astypalaia as the “Butterfly of the Aegean”, noting its crystal‑clear waters, relaxed pace, tranquil beaches even during peak season, a Venetian castle, traditional tavernas and genuine local life. Deputy mayor Konstantinos Kampylis said, "Astypalaia manages to stand out because it offers what the modern traveler now seeks: authentic experiences, a unique natural environment, quality services and respect for local identity," and affirmed the municipality’s focus on a sustainable tourism model that benefits visitors and the local community.
The list also includes destinations from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and the Netherlands, confirming a broader European trend toward authentic and sustainable travel.
