Asunción police arrest suspect in machete assault of teenager
Police in Asunción have arrested Miguel Ángel Benítez Rodríguez, a suspected gang leader, following the violent assault of a 15-year-old boy. The victim was robbed of a mobile phone and struck in the face with a machete during the incident in the Tacumbú neighborhood.
Benítez confessed to the crime, stating he acted under the influence of crack cocaine. He claimed he used his mother's vehicle without permission and noted that he is a personal friend of the victim's father, Arturo Capelli, to whom he offered apologies.
Investigators believe Benítez leads a carjacking gang responsible for several similar robberies in the area. The suspect has a criminal history involving aggravated robbery and violence. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to apprehend two other accomplices.
