Asunción teenager leaves intensive care following car accident
Iván Marcelo, a teenager who was struck by a car on Santísimo Sacramento Avenue in Asunción on August 24, has been moved from the pediatric intensive care unit to a conventional ward at the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS).
While his condition is described as showing favorable evolution—having been removed from a respirator and monitors—he remains in a coma. His father, Aldo Sosa, reported that the youth responds to certain stimuli but lacks movement in his limbs.
The family has launched a campaign to fund the intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation required to treat severe head trauma. Specialized neurological rehabilitation is reportedly only available at a private clinic in Paraguay, costing approximately G. 3 million per day. The total cost for his recovery is estimated at G. 1,000 million.
