Asunción Zoo hosts native South American macaws

The Asunción Zoo in Paraguay is hosting native South American macaws as part of its environmental education and conservation efforts. The collection includes 16 blue-and-yellow macaws and six red macaws.

According to veterinarian Dr. Stella Espínola, these birds are native to the region rather than exotic species. Some specimens were born at the zoo approximately five years ago, while others were acquired through wildlife seizures.

To improve animal welfare and encourage breeding, the blue-and-yellow macaws were recently moved to a larger habitat. Staff are currently installing new nests to support the birds' annual reproductive cycle, where pairs typically incubate approximately two eggs.
