Asus launches Eee PC, initiating the netbook boom

On October 16, 2007, Asus began sales of the Eee PC in Taiwan, an event that laid the foundation for the netbook boom. The mini-notebook was released in four different configurations with prices ranging from approximately 173 to 300 euros.

The devices featured a seven-inch LCD with a resolution of 800 x 480. Hardware specifications varied by model, ranging from 256 MiB of RAM and 2 GiB of flash storage to 1 GiB of RAM and 8 GiB of flash storage. Connectivity options included Wi-Fi, three USB ports, a network port, an SD card slot, and a VGA output, though mobile cellular standards like UMTS were not supported.

The Eee PC saw immediate commercial success, with Asus selling 350,000 units within the first two months, exceeding company expectations.
