Nigerian education unions threaten strikes and demand salary reforms
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to settle outstanding salary arrears. SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim stated that failure to comply with the demands regarding the 2026 FGN/SSANU CONTTA salary structure, withheld salaries from a 2022 strike, and recent percentage increases will result in an indefinite strike. The union noted that while some universities have implemented the agreement using internal funds, others have failed to do so due to funding and administrative challenges.
Separately, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) is advocating for improved welfare for educators. During World Teachers’ Day celebrations, ASUSS President Sola Adigun called for the implementation of a Special Teachers’ Salary Structure (STSS) to make the profession more attractive to graduates. The union also urged the government to provide subsidized housing for teachers, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, where high rents have forced many educators to commute long distances or sleep in classrooms.
