ASUU threatens indefinite strike in Edo, Delta and Ondo state universities over unpaid agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Benine Zone warned the governments of Edo, Delta and Ondo states that, unless the 2025 Federal‑Government/ASUU Agreement is fully implemented by the end of July, the union will commence an indefinite strike at seven state‑owned universities. The agreement, unveiled on 14 January 2026, obliges state governments to pay the Consolidated Academic and Technologists Allowance and settle accrued arrears for academic staff. While federal universities and at least ten state universities have already complied, the three state governments have not provided the required funding, prompting ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator Prof. Monday Igbafen to describe the delay as “provocative and unjust.”

ASUU branches at Ambrose Alli University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Delta State University, University of Delta, Dennis Osadebay University and Southern Delta University have begun mobilising for a total shutdown of academic activities. The union says it remains committed to industrial peace but will not hesitate to shut down the institutions if the governors do not act, urging them to honour the agreement to avoid disruption of education.
