ASUU Threatens Shutdown of Lagos State Universities Over Unimplemented 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Lagos Zone warned that the three Lagos State‑owned institutions – Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology – could be shut down if the state government does not promptly implement the 2025 Federal Government‑ASUU agreement on salaries and welfare. The agreement, signed on 23 December 2025 and effective 1 January 2026, provides a 40 percent salary increase for lecturers and a consolidated academic tools allowance. Six months after the agreement took effect, ASUU says Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has yet to enact its provisions, leading to staff demoralisation and the risk of industrial unrest.

ASUU also issued fresh strike warnings to the governments of Gombe and Plateau states, citing similar delays in applying the agreement at Gombe State University and Plateau State University. Union leaders urged immediate action to avoid further disruptions to academic calendars and the quality of university output across the affected states.
