ASUU threatens nationwide university strikes over unmet 2025 agreement in multiple Nigerian states

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued warnings of indefinite strikes and possible shutdowns at state‑owned universities in several Nigerian states, including Edo, Delta, Ondo, Plateau, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and Taraba. The union says state governments have failed to implement the 2025 Federal Government‑ASUU Agreement, which provides for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other salary arrears, despite the agreement being signed six months ago.

ASUU representatives in each zone – such as Prof. Monday Igbafen in the Benin zone, Prof. Lawan Abubakar in Plateau, and Adesola Nassir in Lagos – warned that continued delay will force lecturers to withdraw their services, disrupting academic calendars and harming students. The union has called on governors, including Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos and Agbu Kefas of Taraba, to release the funding needed to honour the agreement.

While some states have begun applying the agreement, the union stresses that the lack of compliance in the listed states could lead to industrial action, reduced staff morale, and a decline in academic standards across Nigeria’s public university system.
