ASX market sees record ETF inflows amid retail sector decline
The Australian ETF industry reached a significant milestone in August, recording $7 billion in net inflows and bringing total assets to $382 billion. International equities led this growth with $3.8 billion in inflows, as investors increasingly look toward global markets amid domestic equity weakness.
Conversely, the Australian retail sector has faced significant challenges. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index has declined nearly 13% in 2026, with a 23% drop over the past year. Analysts at Morgan Stanley remain cautious regarding the sector's outlook for FY27, citing risks such as rising interest rates, declining consumer confidence, and a cooling housing market.
Individual stock performance across the ASX has been mixed. While energy giant Woodside Energy Group reported a 13% increase in operating revenue for the first half of FY26, other major players have faced downgrades. Notable downgrades include WiseTech Global, West African Resources, Ansell, and Harvey Norman, the latter of which received a ‘sell’ rating from Morgan Stanley.
