Asya Önel Karate Championship held in Tekirdağ
The Asya Önel Inter-City Karate Championship was held in Çorlu, Tekirdağ, on August 29-30 as part of the August 30 Victory Day celebrations. The tournament was organized to honor the memory of Asya Önel, a 14-year-old karate athlete who passed away.
A total of 880 athletes representing 18 different provinces participated in the event at the Çorlu 100. Yıl Indoor Sports Hall. The competition was divided into two main groups: 460 young athletes aged 6-10 competed on the first day, followed by 420 star category athletes aged 11-13 on the second day. Participants competed in both kata and kumite disciplines across 46 and 44 different categories, respectively.
Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Candan Yüceer and Çorlu Mayor Ahmet Sarıkurt attended the opening ceremony. Mayor Yüceer emphasized that the most significant aspect of the championship was keeping Asya Önel's memory alive through the sport. Mayor Sarıkurt noted that the event serves to pass on the spirit of discipline and sportsmanship to new generations.
