Asylum seeker emergency shelter stays exceed 10,000 in the Netherlands
The number of overnight stays in emergency shelters for asylum seekers in the Netherlands has surpassed 10,000. Managed by the Red Cross, these facilities were established in late May to prevent asylum seekers from sleeping outside the Ter Apel registration center when capacity is reached.
Data indicates that the Zuidwolde location in Drenthe has hosted the most stays at 4,079, followed by Warffum in Groningen with 2,110. Due to capacity issues, the Red Cross has implemented new protocols to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized individuals from mixing with the group, which had previously caused tensions.
The Red Cross reports a lack of flow within the asylum system. While asylum seekers previously stayed in emergency shelters for only a few nights, many are now staying for up to ten consecutive nights. This bottleneck is attributed to the shortage of space in regular asylum centers and a broader housing crisis that prevents status holders from moving into permanent residences.
