Asymetree launches AI‑driven drone platform to optimise irrigation in Spanish orchards
A spin‑off of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Asymetree, has introduced a precision‑agriculture platform that combines drones equipped with thermal cameras and artificial‑intelligence algorithms. The system flies over orchards, captures thermal images of each tree, and analyses the data to determine individual water stress, allowing growers to apply irrigation only where needed.
Developed by the Instituto de Agricultura Sostenible (IAS‑CSIC) after more than 20 years of research in remote sensing, phenotyping and precision watering, the platform also integrates LiDAR and hyperspectral sensors. It is currently being tested on olive, almond, pistachio, vineyard and citrus trees in Spain, with the aim of reducing water and energy consumption, cutting production costs and improving crop quality while promoting environmental sustainability.
