Atacama and Coquimbo leaders demand better reconstruction plan
Regional authorities and legislators are raising concerns regarding the reconstruction plan for the Atacama and Coquimbo regions following recent floods and alluvial events. During a technical-political meeting in Santiago, Atacama Governor Miguel Vargas criticized the initial design of the coordination table, noting that regional and communal authorities were not included from the beginning. Vargas emphasized that the plan must address the actual needs of the territory, as local governments possess direct knowledge of the damage.
There is also significant debate regarding financing. While Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz suggested using the Budget Law to channel reconstruction funds, Governor Vargas warned this might be insufficient and suggested seeking additional sources, such as an Infrastructure Fund for the Northern Macrozone.
Senator Daniel Núñez also called for immediate central resources to repair damaged housing in areas like Monte Patria, Andacollo, and Illapel, as well as to restore productive infrastructure including irrigation canals and artisanal fishing support. Núñez expressed opposition to government proposals to fund reconstruction through the sale of state-owned land and shares in companies, labeling such measures as risky for public heritage.
