Atacama Desert prepares for major flowering event and extreme temperature shifts

The Atacama Desert is experiencing a significant natural phenomenon as the 'Desierto Florido' (Flowering Desert) prepares for one of its largest blooms in 30 years. Following winter rains in Chile's Norte Chico region, the flowering is expected to cover approximately 17,000 square kilometers and involve three national parks.

Aída Baldini, executive director of CONAF, described the event as a “true miracle,” noting that the rainfall was sufficient to reach geophyte species located deeper underground. This increased moisture is expected to boost the diversity and visibility of flowers compared to typical years.

In addition to the blooming, the region continues to exhibit extreme thermal amplitude. Due to high solar radiation, low humidity, and clear skies, the desert experiences intense daytime heat—often exceeding 30°C—followed by rapid heat loss at night, which can cause temperatures to drop below freezing.
