Atacama Desert research reveals ancient whale fossils
Paleontological research in Chile’s Atacama Desert has utilized ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology to identify significant fossil deposits. The study, which included Sabrina Leftraru, a geology student from the Universidad Católica del Maule, successfully mapped areas containing marine fossils in what is now one of the world’s most arid regions.
The use of GPR allowed researchers to detect approximately 40 different species of cetaceans, along with other marine mammals and microfossils, beneath the desert surface. This technology helps researchers delimit areas of interest more efficiently, reducing the time, cost, and resources required for physical excavations. Beyond the discovery of remains, the findings provide insights into the life, mortality, and environmental interactions of ancient marine species that inhabited the area millions of years ago.
