Atanasio Girardot stadium to undergo technological modernization
The Medellín Mayor's Office has unveiled a technological modernization plan for the Atanasio Girardot stadium, developed by the Empresa para la Seguridad y Soluciones Urbanas (ESU) with technical advisory from Spain's LALIGA. The project aims to upgrade the venue to international standards while maintaining its status as a 100% public facility.
Key technological upgrades include a 360-degree perimeter screen measuring over 420 meters long by 5 meters wide, and a new lighting system featuring 304 high-efficiency LED luminaries distributed across the four stands to replace traditional lighting towers. The stadium will also feature enhanced connectivity, including free Wi-Fi capable of supporting 70,000 simultaneous users, as well as improved audio, television broadcasting, and security systems.
Beyond technology, the project intends to increase the stadium's capacity from 44,000 to 60,000 spectators. Public bidding documents are scheduled for release on October 15, 2026, with contract awards expected between late November and early December. The completed works are projected to be ready during the first half of 2028, adhering to FIFA and CONMEBOL regulations.
