Atar Singh Bhadana, former BJP MLA, killed in Rajasthan mob attack

Atar Singh Bhadana, a former BJP MLA, died at SMS Hospital in Jaipur following a violent mob attack in Bhaunda village, Bharatpur district, Rajasthan. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM at a stone crusher mining site.

A group of approximately 70 to 80 people allegedly attacked Bhadana and his associate, bodyguard Gagan Sharma, using sticks and stones. Bhadana sustained approximately 40 injuries, including severe head trauma, before succumbing to his injuries at approximately 11:30 PM. Sharma was also seriously injured and referred for treatment in Bharatpur.

The attack is linked to a long-standing, two-year dispute regarding a silica stone mining lease and access to the site. Villagers had been protesting for 10 to 15 days, alleging that the mining operations encroached on grazing land. Conversely, Bhadana’s family alleged that the administration failed to act on reports of harassment, including the disconnection of electricity and water at the lease site.

Police have registered cases against over 94 individuals and deployed more than 200 personnel to maintain order in the region. The Congress party has criticized the state government, citing a collapse in law and order in the Chief Minister’s home district.
