Atari announces modern recreation of classic 800XL computer

Atari has announced the return of the 800XL, a modernized recreation of its iconic 8-bit home computer originally released in 1983. Designed by Retro Games Ltd. and manufactured/distributed by PLAION REPLAI, the new hardware aims to blend nostalgic design with contemporary connectivity.

The device features a full-sized mechanical keyboard with integrated Atari BASIC for programming, a working cartridge slot compatible with the Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE families, and a redesigned THECXSTICK joystick. Modern upgrades include HDMI output with CRT filters, USB-C power, and four USB-A ports for controllers or loading software via USB drives (supporting cartridge, disk, and cassette images).

The THE 800XL comes with 25 pre-installed games, including classics such as Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and M.U.L.E. Pre-orders are currently available, with shipping scheduled to begin on April 23, 2027. Pricing is set at approximately $219.99 USD, £199.99 GBP, €219.99 EUR, and AUD $349.99.
