Atari to close VCS software store in February 2027

Atari has announced that the software store for its Atari VCS console will officially close on February 1, 2027. The announcement was made via the Atari Club Discord channel.

To prevent the hardware from becoming obsolete, the company plans to release an operating system update designed to remove dependency on company servers. This update will migrate essential functions to local machines, including authentication and software features. Additionally, Atari will launch the ‘Homebrew’ application, which will allow users to install new games and enable developers to continue creating and sharing content with the community.

The Atari VCS, originally introduced as the Ataribox, launched in 2021 following a successful crowdfunding campaign. Unlike traditional retro consoles, it utilized a digital distribution platform rather than physical cartridges and offered compatibility with Windows and Linux. While direct sales of the console had previously ceased, Atari has committed to supporting the platform through these firmware updates to ensure continued usability for existing owners.
