ATBU Female Students Protest After Hostel Robbery Over Security Lapses

Female students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Nigeria staged a peaceful protest on Monday following an armed robbery that breached the university's female hostel in the early hours of Sunday. The intruders broke into about eight rooms and stole roughly 20 mobile phones, leaving students traumatised. Victims such as Fauziyya Abdullahi warned, “Our main fear is if they come in here and march us out. We do not want to be another Chibok girls,” while Rejoice Duke described the attackers demanding phones and threatening lives.

The students marched to the university Senate building to demand stronger security measures. Vice‑Chancellor and senior administrators visited the scene, describing the incident as unfortunate and pledging to improve campus surveillance. Bauchi State Police Command public relations officer Nafiu Habib confirmed an investigation is under way as part of the Safe School Initiative, aiming to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
