Atceres garden memorial opens in Zolitūde

The Atceres garden, a memorial dedicated to the victims of the 2013 Zolitūde tragedy, has been officially opened in Riga. The memorial is located on a 0.8-hectare site and is designed to provide a quiet space for survivors and relatives to reflect.

The memorial features 54 polished stainless steel mirror spheres of various sizes, representing the 54 lives lost when the Maxima supermarket roof collapsed due to structural miscalculations. The garden is surrounded by perimeter plantings and a linear park that connects the site to the surrounding urban environment.

Approximately 100 people attended the opening, including Riga City Council deputies, relatives of the deceased, and representatives from the State Fire and Rescue Service, the State Police, and emergency medical services. The project was funded by the Riga municipal budget, with an initial cost of nearly two million euros and additional funding of 11,131 euros.
