Ateneo Blue Eagles secure victory in emotional return to competition

Ateneo de Manila University’s Blue Eagles returned to competition on Sunday, securing a 71-60 victory over Our Lady of Fatima University in the Pinoyliga Big Dance. The win marks the team’s first game since the June 8 tragedy in Aurora, which resulted in the deaths of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity.

Interim head coach Louie Alas, who took over following the resignation of Tab Baldwin, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to play. The atmosphere at the Blue Eagles Gym was highly emotional, particularly during the playing of the Ateneo anthem and the singing of ‘A Song for Mary.’

Despite showing signs of rust due to a limited two-week practice period, the team was led by Travis Roberts with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Kieffer Alas contributed 12 points. Alas noted that while early struggles were expected, the team’s recent preparation would help them regain their rhythm.
