Atera Energy to invest $500 million in Mexico's energy sector
Atera Energy, a firm specializing in energy efficiency and self-generation backed by Brookfield and Celsia, has announced its entry into the Mexican market with a planned investment of $500 million over the next five years.
The company aims to target the industrial sector, leveraging the growing demand for electricity driven by nearshoring and industrial expansion. Key focus areas include the states of Nuevo León, Coahuila, Guanajuato, and Querétaro. Atera Energy will utilize an ‘Energy as a Service’ (EaaS) model, where it finances, builds, operates, and maintains energy infrastructure for industrial clients. Under this scheme, companies pay a tariff for services such as electricity, compressed air, heat, or cooling without needing to provide the initial capital investment.
This investment follows new Mexican electricity sector legislation that reinforces the role of the state-owned Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) while maintaining a 46% capacity for private participation in generation and self-consumption.
