Atewa Forest faces escalating illegal mining threats in Ghana
The Atewa Range Forest Reserve in Ghana is facing an escalating threat from illegal mining, prompting responses from both environmental groups and state authorities. A Rocha Ghana has warned that the destruction of the 26,300-hectare reserve threatens critical biodiversity and water security, as the forest serves as the headwaters for several major rivers and provides water for over five million people.
The environmental organization reported evidence of excavated areas, stripped vegetation, and polluted streams within the reserve. A Rocha Ghana also expressed concern regarding the legal process, noting that several cases involving suspected illegal miners have faced repeated adjournments and bail between 2021 and 2026.
In response, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) announced it is collaborating with security and state agencies to take decisive action. NAIMOS stated it has already conducted reconnaissance operations within the reserve and is working to verify intelligence to guide its next interventions to protect the forest and its surrounding communities.
