Athanasios Christodoulou presents Moby Dick inspired exhibition
The Lofos Art Project is hosting ‘Storismata sto Moby Dick’ (Moby Dick Fragments), an exhibition featuring the work of painter Athanasios Christodoulou. Curated by art historian Faye Zanetoulakou, the collection spans nearly three decades of creative work produced between 1997 and 2025.
The exhibition is inspired by Herman Melville’s classic novel, but functions as a visual commentary rather than a simple illustration. The title uses the traditional Greek artistic term ‘storisma,’ referring to the narrative depiction of a story, similar to church frescoes. Each painting engages with specific passages from the book, ranging from the opening chapter to the epilogue, acting as a second, visual translation of Melville’s text.
Christodoulou’s works are described as an ‘unreal and revelatory universe’ where forms dissolve into one another, such as faces emerging from waves or a ship’s sail transforming into a whale’s mask. The exhibition runs from Friday, October 23, through Sunday, November 15.
