athenahealth deploys ambient AI to 170,000 clinicians

athenahealth has announced the broad deployment of AI-native capabilities across its athenaOne network, providing ambient documentation features to more than 170,000 physicians and clinicians.

The core tool, athenaAmbient, is integrated directly into the electronic health record (EHR) at no additional cost. It functions by capturing patient-clinician conversations to automatically generate draft clinical notes, suggest diagnoses, recommend orders, and identify care gaps in real time.

Data from late 2025 indicates that the technology reduces chart preparation and documentation time by nearly six minutes per patient encounter. This efficiency gain is estimated to save clinicians more than two workdays per month and has led to a reported 30% increase in same-day chart completion rates among early adopters.
