Athens attracts major hedge funds through fiscal stability strategy

Athens is emerging as a potential destination for major global hedge funds, following a year-long strategic effort by Greek officials to position the country as a stable financial hub. A key milestone in this initiative is the arrival of Millennium Management, one of the world’s largest and most strictly regulated hedge funds.

Greek authorities have marketed the nation to financial professionals by highlighting its safe, stable, and predictable tax environment, alongside lifestyle advantages such as mild weather. Officials argue that the fiscal discipline adopted following the country’s debt crisis has created a competitive edge. Vasilis Karatzas, an advisor to Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, noted that Greece is now fiscally healthy, consistently producing surpluses and offering macroeconomic stability.

This strategy aims to attract high-net-worth professionals seeking predictability, particularly as they face increasing tax burdens in other traditional financial centers like London.
