Athens Cathedral hosts service honoring Saint Romanos the Melodist

The Association of Psaltes of the Attica Region held a commemorative service at the Athens Cathedral on Wednesday, September 3, to honor Saint Romanos the Melodist. The event featured a Great Panegyrical Vespers presided over by Bishop Barnabas of Christoupolis, representing Archbishop Ieronymos, alongside Metropolitan Ignatius of Demetrias.

Musical performances were provided by two choirs: the Association of Psaltes of the Attica Region, led by Spyridon Pavlakis, and the choir of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias ‘Saint John Koukouzelis’, led by Dimitrios Chatzigeorgiou.

Archimandrite Epiphanios Oikonomou, Director of the School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias, delivered a speech regarding the life and hymnographic legacy of Saint Romanos. He emphasized that psalmody should be an act of service and humility rather than mere artistic display or personal ambition.
