Badminton building demolition begins in Goudi
Demolition work has commenced on the former Olympic Badminton building in the Goudi area of Athens. The operation was ordered by Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, following a 2012 Council of State decision to remove the temporary 2004 Olympic installation.
The building, which suffered extensive damage from a fire in July, is located within the Ilarchou Nikolaou Varytis barracks. The demolition is a key step toward restoring legality to the area and accelerating the creation of the Goudi-Ilisia Metropolitan Park.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas recently secured a unanimous vote from the Athens City Council to prioritize the removal of the structure. Doukas emphasized that clearing the site is essential for reclaiming public space and addressing climate crisis needs through the development of large, accessible green areas.
