Athens cost of living rises for locals amid seasonal tourism price drops

Athens is becoming increasingly expensive for local residents due to low average wages and rising living costs. While the city remains cheaper than many other European capitals, rent poses a significant challenge. On average, a one-bedroom apartment in the center of Athens costs approximately 640 euros, which accounts for 55 percent of the average local monthly salary of 1,158 euros.

In addition to housing, food costs are a concern. A typical meal in Athens costs around 15 euros, a price comparable to major cities like Paris, Berlin, and Rome, despite those cities having significantly higher average incomes. While fruit and vegetables are relatively affordable, milk prices in Athens are among the highest in the analyzed group, and fuel remains expensive due to high taxes.

In contrast to the rising costs for residents, the tourism sector in Greece shows significant price drops during the shoulder season. In September, travel offers to various Greek destinations, including Halkidiki, Thassos, and Corfu, can fall below 200 euros per person, with some packages for areas like Sarti and Nikiti starting as low as 75 euros.
