Kypseli, Athens Metro Tunnel Damage Triggers Municipal Aid

Technical inspections have begun on the Metro tunnel works in the Kypseli district of Athens after subsidence caused damage to more than 15 apartment buildings. Engineers from the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) are examining the affected structures to determine the cause of the ground movements that led to cracks and structural concerns.

During the 29 July municipal council meeting, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and council members voted unanimously to support the affected residents. The council approved funding for two independent expert assessments and a legal adviser, and will seek official access to the project’s design studies from the national government and the contractor, Elliniko Metro. The company has been asked to carry out immediate repairs to all damaged properties and to conduct static‑capacity checks where needed. The suspension of the tunnel boring machine, ordered on 8 May due to unexpected low‑permeability ground conditions, remains in effect.

Elliniko Metro’s president, Christos Karadimas, and other project representatives were present at the hearing, acknowledging the ongoing issues and the need for transparent communication with the community.
