Athens crime crackdown: New housing bans and deportation measures announced

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoïdis has announced a series of measures to combat crime and unregulated housing in central Athens. To address the issue of overcrowded apartments in areas such as Patisia and Agios Panteleimonas, the government is preparing a legislative provision to ban the leasing and subleasing of properties used for the mass housing of migrants. Chrysochoïdis reported that some apartments are being used as informal hostels, where up to 30 people pay between 10 and 30 euros per night to sleep.

In addition to housing regulations, the Minister announced increased police presence in key squares, including Victoria, Amerikis, and Agios Panteleimonas, to curb petty crime and drug trafficking. He also stated that migrants involved in criminal activities will face deportation, even if they are not in pre-trial detention or are under restrictive conditions.

Regarding telecommunications crime, Chrysochoïdis described an epidemic of phone fraud and announced upcoming legislation to increase penalties for these crimes, particularly when they target the elderly or minors. The political party MeRA25 has criticized these measures, labeling the Minister's rhetoric as xenophobic and authoritarian.
