Athens economic growth outpaces urban infrastructure
Athens is experiencing rapid economic growth that is outstripping its existing infrastructure, according to Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras. The Attica region serves as Greece's primary economic engine, producing nearly half of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounting for approximately 40% of total employment.
Stournaras noted that the region's per capita GDP of nearly €30,000 significantly exceeds the national average of €21,000. This prosperity is bolstered by a strong tertiary sector and a massive surge in tourism; in 2025, Attica saw travel receipts increase by 125.3% compared to 2019.
However, this success has created intense pressure on housing, transportation, energy, and basic utilities. Experts highlight that the city's aging building stock and outdated networks—including sewage, water, and heating—struggle to cope with the dual pressure of population concentration and the rise of short-term rentals. The shift toward tourism-driven property use is complicating building management and infrastructure maintenance.
