Athens explosion injures four during suspicious bag inspection

An explosion occurred on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2026, at an apartment building on Platonos Street in the Kolonos district of Athens. The incident took place during a police inspection of a suspicious bag reported by the building manager.

Four people were injured in the blast: two police officers and two civilians. One police officer sustained serious injuries, including trauma to the face and eyes, and underwent surgery for a finger amputation; he was transported to the 401 Military Hospital. The other three victims were taken to Evangelismos Hospital with lighter injuries.

The bag contained drugs, a precision scale, and an improvised explosive device (IED) consisting of a detonator, a remote control, and a battery. Authorities are investigating whether the device was a booby trap intended for the police or if it was abandoned by someone attempting to dispose of narcotics. The Organized Crime Unit and the Explosives Disposal Service are leading the investigation, which includes reviewing security camera footage to identify the person who left the bag.
