Athens faces rising rental prices and housing crisis

Athens is facing a severe housing crisis as rental prices continue to climb, making the city increasingly unaffordable for many residents. Citizens report that monthly rents of 700, 800, or even 1,000 euros often fail to provide adequate housing quality, leading to claims that the cost does not offer 'value for money'.

The rising costs are significantly impacting the autonomy of young people, who are finding it difficult to move out of their parental homes and are often forced to live with roommates to manage expenses.

Data from the Bank of Greece indicates significant increases in apartment and rental prices throughout 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Greece currently experiences one of the highest housing burdens in the European Union, with households spending an average of 36% of their disposable income on housing.
