Athens historical accounts reveal past city life

During the quieter month of August, Athens experiences a slower pace of life, allowing for a reflection on its historical and cosmopolitan identity. Using texts curated from the Historical Archive of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, historical accounts bring the city's past to life.

One such account features the writings of poet and botanist Theodoros Orfanidis (1817-1886), who described the Neapoli neighborhood located between Strephi and Lycabettus hills. Orfanidis noted the local students' obsession with the flute and detailed their daily routines, which included eating seasonal milk, salep, or bread and cheese before attending classes.
