Athens homelessness data submitted to Greek Parliament

Data regarding the profile of homeless individuals in Athens has been submitted to the Greek Parliament as part of a parliamentary audit. The findings are based on a survey conducted in October 2025 by the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with Panteion University, covering 681 individuals.

The survey identified 384 people living on the streets and 297 through social service providers. It excluded individuals residing in permanent apartments or supported living structures. The demographic breakdown shows that 71% of those recorded were men, 29% were women, and 69.9% were Greek nationals. A significant majority, 62%, were over the age of 50, while only 8% were under 30. Additionally, 65.8% reported living alone without family or partner support.

The data highlights the chronic nature of the issue, with 31.6% of respondents having been without independent housing for more than five years. The primary drivers for homelessness cited were economic difficulties (72.2%), health and addiction issues (37.9%), and family problems (30.2%).

Domna Michailidou, the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, stated that addressing homelessness and housing exclusion is a fundamental part of social policy, aimed at protecting human dignity and ensuring access to appropriate housing and social reintegration.
