Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games flame to be lit in Athens
Preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are accelerating as the Olympic flame begins its journey. On September 10, a ceremony at the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece, will officially light the flame and hand it over to a Senegalese delegation led by Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, president of the Senegalese National Olympic and Sports Committee.
The flame is expected to arrive in Senegal on September 12. To facilitate the arrival ceremony, authorities have announced the temporary closure of a section of the Corniche Ouest in Dakar on Saturday, September 12, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Following its arrival, the flame will embark on a national tour, traveling through all 14 regions of Senegal via approximately 30 stages between September 14 and October 30.
Dakar 2026 will mark the first time an Olympic event is hosted on the African continent. The games are scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026. In support of the event's logistics, the Sustainable Urban Transport Executive Council (CETUD) has opened online registration for urban taxis to join the official mobility network for the games.
