Athens launches AthensCharge digital EV charging platform

The Municipality of Athens has launched ‘AthensCharge’, a new digital platform and mobile application designed to manage and facilitate the use of municipal electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Operated through DAEM S.A., the service allows drivers to locate available chargers, initiate and monitor charging sessions, and complete electronic payments. This marks the first instance in Greece where a municipality, via a municipal company, has taken full responsibility for the operation and management of its own EV charging network.

In a broader national context, Greece is preparing for significant regulatory changes regarding EV infrastructure set to take effect on January 1, 2027. New requirements will mandate the installation of charging points in residential and commercial buildings with large parking capacities. For spaces with more than 20 parking spots, regulations will require at least one charging point per ten spaces, along with the necessary electrical infrastructure to support future expansions. These measures aim to integrate EV charging into daily routines at workplaces, hotels, and shopping centers.
