Athens launches pilot phase for municipal electric bus network

The Municipality of Athens has launched the pilot phase of ‘Athens Move’, a new municipal electric bus network designed to complement existing transit systems like OASA and the Metro. The project aims to address ‘last mile’ connectivity gaps and improve access in underserved neighborhoods.

Supported by €11.75 million from the EU Social Climate Fund, the initial plan features four lines covering approximately 40 kilometers with 185 stops and 17 electric buses. The planned routes include connections between Neos Kosmos, Petralona, and Kerameiko; Kato Patisia, Sepolia, and Kerameiko; Prompona, Ano Patisia, and Kypseli; and Attiki and Kypseli.

Mayor Charis Doukas stated that the network was designed through discussions with residents across seven municipal districts to identify specific mobility needs. While the original design envisioned seven lines, current funding secures the implementation of these first four routes, which are expected to be fully operational by 2027.
