Athens: Lycabettus Hill reopens amid high fire risk

The Municipality of Athens has announced that Lycabettus Hill will reopen to the public starting from midnight on Friday, August 14, following updated weather forecasts. However, Finopoulou Hill remains closed until further notice.

Due to a high fire risk level (category 4) driven by strong winds, municipal services remain on high alert. The Municipal Police are conducting continuous patrols across major green spaces in central Athens, including Lycabettus, Strefi, Philopappou, Turkovounia, and Ilisia. These patrols utilize drones equipped with thermal cameras to detect temperature fluctuations that could indicate fire threats.

The Municipal Police Operations Center is functioning 24/7 to coordinate with the Fire Service and other municipal departments, while water tankers remain on standby. Authorities have issued a strong recommendation for citizens to avoid any outdoor activities that could trigger a fire, such as using open flames, welding, metal cutting, or any work involving sparks.
