Kypseli buildings face structural risks from Athens Metro construction

The Athens Municipality held an emergency council meeting to address structural damage to buildings in the Kypseli district caused by tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations for Athens Metro Line 4. Mayor Harris Doukas reported that 14 out of 35 inspected buildings showed subsidence levels up to four times the permissible limit, with some properties reaching a ‘red’ risk level.

Mayor Doukas has issued five primary demands: the immediate release of all technical data from Elliniko Metro, comprehensive structural studies and reinforcements, the provision of temporary housing (such as hotels) for residents feeling unsafe, a clear timeline for repairs, and a halt to TBM operations until absolute safety is guaranteed.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos acknowledged the failures during the Kypseli transit and stated that the TBM will not resume until new safety protocols and studies are finalized and publicly presented. He emphasized that the contractor is responsible for restoring all affected buildings to their original or improved condition. The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) will oversee the assessment of the necessary repairs.
