Kypseli residents protest building damage from Metro Line 4 works

Residents of the Kypseli district in Athens are protesting against structural damage to approximately 35 apartment buildings caused by the passage of the Metropontikas tunnel for Metro Line 4 construction. The damage includes significant cracks, floor subsidence, and issues with doors and structural elements.

Political figures and local officials have voiced concerns regarding resident safety. Alexis Tsipras, president of the Greek Left Coalition, visited the affected sites and called for immediate certified assessments to categorize buildings as ‘green’, ‘yellow’, or ‘red’. He demanded that the state cover relocation costs for those in unsafe housing and provide all technical data to independent experts.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas stated that relocation expenses should be covered by the project contractor. Meanwhile, residents and their technical advisors have accused the government and ‘Elliniko Metro’ of a lack of transparency, alleging that critical measurements and studies have not been fully shared. A protest is planned at Kypseli Square to demand accountability and permanent solutions for the affected families.
