Athens Mayor Unveils 'Engineer of the Neighborhood' Rapid School Repair Service

The Municipality of Athens has launched a new service called “Engineer of the Neighborhood” to provide immediate maintenance and repair work for schools and municipal buildings. Two specially equipped mobile units have been deployed, and more than 20 interventions have already been carried out in 20 locations, including 9 schools and 11 municipal facilities. The crews handle small‑scale construction, electrical, plumbing, metal‑work, sealing, network repairs and equipment replacement.

Requests are submitted by school directors through the online platform athensschools.cityofathens.gr, where the type of fault, priority level and technical details are recorded. The Building Infrastructure Directorate, in coordination with the Education Directorate, evaluates each request and issues work orders. Mayor Haris Doukas said the program replaces the former School Committees with a faster response mechanism, aiming for safe and functional schools. Deputy Mayor Paris Charlaftis highlighted the priority of rapid assistance and the effort to cut bureaucracy.
