Marfin arson case: Court rejects appeal for 46-year-old defendant
The Athens Misdemeanor Court Council has rejected an appeal by a 46-year-old woman seeking release from pre-trial detention regarding the 2010 Marfin Bank arson attack. The decision (decree 3763/2026) means she will remain in prison following her arrest last August.
The defendant's lawyer, Kostas Papadakis, has criticized the ruling, alleging that the court ignored several key factors. These include a 2022 acquittal on related charges and a lack of positive identification by the Hellenic Police's Forensic Science Directorate, which reportedly failed to match the defendant with the suspect seen in visual evidence.
Papadakis further argued that the prosecution is being conducted despite a lack of evidence and claimed the judicial process is being influenced by the prevailing political and media atmosphere. The defense intends to exhaust all legal avenues to contest the detention, citing the severe impact on the defendant's life and her five-year-old daughter.
