Athens perception survey reveals cultural strengths and urban stressors

A new survey by Metron Analysis, presented at the ‘Dialogues for Athens’ conference, reveals how Greeks perceive the capital city. The study, which gathered data from across Greece, highlights a sharp contrast between the city’s cultural assets and its urban challenges.

On the positive side, 85% of respondents identify ‘culture and history’ as Athens’ top attribute, followed by ‘entertainment and social life’ (76%) and ‘education and employment opportunities’ (73%). Other noted strengths include its cosmopolitan character (61%) and favorable climate (54%).

Conversely, the primary negative perception is ‘stress and mental burden’ at 66%. This is attributed to several underlying issues, including ‘insecurity and crime’ (62%), ‘deterioration of the natural environment’ (60%), ‘high cost of living and housing’ (58%), and ‘traffic and public transport’ (55%). Other concerns include the impact of tourism (53%), lack of cleanliness (52%), and a shortage of public spaces (48%).
